Now that I’m independent and posting more frequently, I’ve joined the iTunes Affiliate Program to help the site earn its own keep. I host this site on Textattern, an excellent, light weight, and very flexible CMS (Content Management System) and—wanting to work smarter, not harder—decided to write a plug-in that could automatically rewrite any iTunes/iBooks/App Store affiliate URL I post in an articles using my iTunes Affiliate Program ID. This will make it easier to just copy links to music, books, or apps from the appropriate store and not have to run them through a different tool to appropriately tag them to hopefully earn a little commission.
Posting around here has been sporadic, at best, lately. With little to no time to author full articles this time of year, I figured I’d better improve the efficiency of my quick linking to tidbits I’ve found elsewhere online. I’ve got a ‘hyper’ section in Textpattern (my CMS of choice) for just such a task, akin to and inspired by the Daring Fireball Linked List, but it’s actually more cumbersome to post to. I usually include a quote and the title from the target site, it’s URL, switch it to the ‘hyper’ section, add some tags and a little commentary. A bookmarklet that could pull in much of that data for me to just tweak and comment could drastically reduce the amount of tab switching and cutting & pasting required.
I was running into a small issue on a project that I’ve been developing with the Textpattern CMS: I couldn’t find a tag to convert a title to a “URL-only title” like the Write tab on the admin side does for you. Textpattern has a built-in function named
sanitizeForUrl() which provides this functionality, but no way to get that from the template system.
I happened across the fact that Digg has implemented new ‘smart’ digg buttons on the 6th. The biggest new feature here is that you no longer have to first ‘submit’ an article to get its “digg url” to use with the “Digg This” buttons and can now just reference the article’s permalink instead.
I’ve had a longer post pending for a couple weeks now regarding the Technorati and tagging support I’ve added to this site (an experiment for the Technorati & tagging support I added to Barkings—the Small Dog Electronics weblog), but I’ve been working too much to finish it and the many other pending posts and articles. Long story short: I’m using the tru_tags Textpattern plug-in (thanks Jon!) and I love it. It really does add a nice dimension to the browsing experience, especially since I don’t really use categories extensively.
