Small Dog Electronics’ eWaste Initiative ¬

2008-07-16

Simply bring your old computer into a retail store, along with your invoice, and we will recycle it free of charge. If you would like to participate online, we will take your old computer when you buy a new one, less shipping charges.

We’ve offered electronic waste recycling for many years, but Apple has had an additional leg up on that front for a couple years now: free recycling when purchasing a new computer. As of today, we can now offer the same!

In a bid to boost Vermont’s economy, Governor Jim Douglas has declared that [Saturday, July 12th, and Sunday, July 13th,] will allow consumers to purchase items up to $2,000, free of tax.

Small Dog Electronics will be open extended hours in our retail stores [and] we’ll also be offering special deals and discounts, including cash savings on all Mac bundles and a free Canon all-in-one when you purchase a Mac with AppleCare!

This is the weekend to buy a computer in Vermont. I’m helping out at the South Burlington retail store today (Saturday).

Setbacks for AT&T (therefore the iPhone) Coming to Vermont ¬

2008-06-19

Regarding the plan for AT&T and Verizon Wireless to swap some properties to allow Verizon Wireless to purchase UNICEL:

“The swap proposal was inadequate because it didn’t cover 2 1/2counties in the southern half of the state. … So that proposal was rejected,” said Julie Brill, Vermont’s assistant attorney general. The omitted counties were Windsor, Windham and Bennington.

“The swap would have meant there would have been a near monopoly in those three counties, so we said, ‘No,’” Brill said.

A disappointment. I had switched to UNICEL over a month ago for other reasons, but I must admit that this pending deal did give me additional motivation.

Local Motion Trail Finder ¬

2008-05-30

I didn’t realize that on this year’s Earth Day Local Motion, a non-profit promoting and supporting pedestrian & bicycle travel in Chittenden County, launched an interactive “Trail Finder”:

The Trail Finder is a free online resource for 77 walking, biking, hiking, and mountain biking trails in Chittenden County. Residents and visitors can get maps and directions, learn about trail features, and submit comments and photos.

It’s built on Google Maps and contains lots of detailed data about the local trails. It really made finding a trail to start bicycling on yesterday quick, easy, and completely painless.

Erin McKeown Back at Higher Ground ¬

2008-01-24

We had a blast the last time Erin McKeown came to Burlington, so when I saw she was coming back I knew I needed to go. Tickets are waiting for us at will-call—courtesy of a pick-your-own-concert birthday gift from my mother and grandmother… thanks again!—so we’ll absolutely be at Higher Ground on January 31st to see her.

Interestingly enough, I had to add the show to last.fm myself. I enjoy an intimate crowd, but she deserves a bigger one than last year so here’s hoping for a many fellow guests.

Emily picked up a copy of Erin’s new album, Lafayette, just after Christmas. It is an excellent recording of a live show at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater on Lafayette Street in New York City and I’d suggest it almost as much as seeing her live. Of course, if you go see one of her live shows you’ll want to pick it up for short trips down memory lane anyway.

Kid Koala in Vermont ¬

2007-04-19

Although already completely broke, I was so ecstatic to learn that Kid Koala will be at Higher Ground in South Burlington, VT, this coming Monday, April 23rd, that I slapped down my credit card for two tickets. Emily and I are especially excited that he’s stopping by Burlington for the last stop of his east coast shows and that we didn’t miss the opportunity to see him again.

We first saw him perform at last year’s Osheaga (Festival Musique et Arts) in Montréal, Quebec, and were completely blown away by his performances. We watched in awe when he played in the Salon des Arts, dumbfounded by his technical skills and the mixes he produced. However, that was only the beginning as he then opened for The Flaming Lips and played the most amazing song I’ve ever heard: an eerie, tear-jerking remix of Audrey Hepburn singing Moon River.

Below is a short video from the first song he played on The Flaming Lips’ stage (they had their giant video screen projecting his handiwork) which I recorded with my Canon SD200. Unfortunately the decibel level was a little loud for the poor built-in mic, but it gives a good idea of the mood.

He followed this song up with the aforementioned Moon River, but I was too entranced to record it. The following is a recording of him playing the song live at Maida Vale for 6 Music and it’s astonishing how well he has it down:

When The Flaming Lips walked onstage, all that Wayne Coyne could say was, “I was standing right next to him and I still have no idea how he did that!” Of course, there was no better show to follow up such a performance and to end the evening than The Flaming Lips! Absolutely stunning and the most fun I’ve ever had at a concert!

We were bummed that we couldn’t make it back up to Montréal for the launch party of Kid Koala’s Your Mom’s Favorite DJ, but are very glad we can make up for it right here in town!

I’ll keep you posted on how it is and I hope many will come out to see what is bound to be an excellent show.

Erin McKeown at Higher Ground ¬

Erin McKeown - Sing You Sinners

Emily and I had a great night out on Friday (the 19th), which centered around seeing Erin McKeown perform at Higher Ground in South Burlington. She put on a stellar show for our stop on her Sing You Sinners tour despite the school-gymnasium-draped-with-old-movie-theater-curtains decor of Higher Ground—I will forever wish for a better venue in our area.

I missed her when she was in town a few years ago, but Emily went—and loved it, although it was an extremely small show—and returned raving with a copy of Grand that I soon fell in love with. Her new album is all covers of tunes from the 20’s through the 50’s with one of her own tossed into the mix. It’s a nice shift to some rock ‘n roll while still retaining the jazziness that I enjoyed so much with Grand.

Having not seen her live before, I was in awe over her stage presence and how tight her vocals are. Anyone who listens to her albums will tell you she has crystal clear vocals that are very smooth, but I was blown away with how perfect they are in concert as well. I also thoroughly enjoyed her enthusiastic stage presence and interaction with the somewhat small and quiet audience.

And she’s definitely not just a singer either, she’s got the guitar down perfectly and you can tell she’s been performing all the stringed instruments for her last few albums herself. It was fun to see her break into guitar solos, something that Grand didn’t quite lend itself to.

She poked at the crowd a bit for being so quiet, but we all really just wanted to hear every nuance of her voice and we made sure to let her hear us between songs. We even managed to get her to come back out for an amazing encore of James! and Lucky Day.

Naturally we returned home with a copy of Sing You Sinners and are continuing to enjoy it. I highly suggest checking out her music if you haven’t before.

My current favorites include Paper Moon, Coucou, Melody, and Rhode Island is Famous For You.

Update: I happened across a photo of an Erin McKeown quote on a Starbucks coffee cup. Cool, but not a place I would have expected to see her name, let alone a quote.

2nd Update: I didn’t realize we were only the second stop on the tour. Plenty of opportunities left for you all to see her live!
